Baalbek - Six Remaining Columns

Baalbek - Six Remaining Columns

At more than seven feet in diameter, the mammoth granite pillars of the Temple of Jupiter are said to be largest stone columns in the world. Only six remain standing, but monstrous sections of the fallen lie everywhere. During the reign of Justinian eight columns were removed to Constantinople (Istanbul) and used in the construction of the Aya Sofia.

Photo circa 2004.
